Benefits Of Drinking Water
Drinking plenty of water is one of the fastest ways to improve your overall health!
Did you know that your body is made up of about 60% water?!? That’s right, over half of you is water!
Literally every process your body performs, both internal and external, requires water. When we do not drink enough water, we can become dehydrated. When we are dehydrated, we can feel tired and unable to concentrate. Dehydration can also cause shriveled, dry skin, undereye circles, and increased heart rate. Extreme dehydration can cause dizziness, unconsciousness, and even death.
Thirst is the body’s signal telling us that we need water. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already at a deficit of water, although possibly only slightly. That is why it is vital to drink water even before you are thirsty.
When you are properly hydrated, you will likely not feel thirsty as often. Another sign of proper hydration is light-colored urine. The lighter your urine, the better hydrated you are. Darker urine is an indication of dehydration and a sign that you need to drink water.
So how much water should you drink every day? The amount of water you need to drink will depend on two variables: you and your activity.
Each individual is different when it comes to necessary water intake. A good rule of thumb is the “8×8” rule which outlines drinking 8, 8-ounce glasses of water per day (2 liters or 2 quarts). Some individuals may require more water per day.
Your activity will also determine how much water you need to drink. While you may drink 8, 8-ounce glasses of water on a typical day, you may need double that amount if you spend the day doing outdoor yard work or a spend the day at the beach.
Do other drinks count as water intake? While it is true that most drinks contain water, beverages like coffee and soda can actually cause your body to lose water. These drinks can contain diuretics, like caffeine, which causes you to urinate more frequently. Other non-water drinks can contain excessive sugar and other chemicals which are not good for your health. Therefore, it is best to track your water intake separately, even if you have a cup of coffee, juice, or milk.
