What Are Dietary Supplements?!

dietary supplement is a “non-food” that contains one or more of the following: 

  • Vitamins 
  • Minerals 
  • Amino Acids 
  • Herbs 
  • Enzymes 
  • Metabolites 
  • Concentrates

Substances like vitamins and minerals have both a Recommended Dietary Allowance, a minimum amount of a substance you should have each day, as well as a Tolerable Upper Intake Limit, a maximum amount of a substance you should have each day. 

The best way to get essential substances like vitamins and minerals is through the foods you eat. When the foods you eat do not provide adequate amounts of the substances you need, that is when you may consider a dietary supplement. Dietary supplements are intended to complement your daily food intake. 

One of the most common supplements is a multi-vitamin. A multi-vitamin is a great way to ensure your body is getting all the vitamins and minerals it needs. Although it is best to get essential vitamins and minerals through the foods you eat, a multi-vitamin is like a nutrient insurance policy! A multi-vitamin ensures you are getting your vitamins and minerals even if you do not eat a well-balanced diet for a day or two. 

Other dietary supplements could consist of substances like protein powder, herbs, or enzymes that are intended to improve some aspect of your health. 

When considering trying dietary supplements, be careful! Dietary supplement manufacturers do not have to pass FDA regulations before selling or marketing products. Always perform detailed research of any supplement you are considering, and when in doubt, always counsel a licensed health care professional. 

Also be wary of any supplement that promises instant results, to be a cure for a disease, or recommends consumption amounts that exceed Tolerable Upper Intake Limits (the maximum amount of a substance you should have each day).
